CHHS Cell Phone Policy

The goal of this policy is to minimize disruptions and distractions to the educational process. To begin class, students are expected to have their cell phones and all other electronic devices including personal tablets, gaming devices, headphones/earbuds, etc. to be silenced, not set to vibrate, and kept completely out of sight. Cell phones are not to be visible on desks during class time.  There are designated areas in the school where cell phone use is strictly prohibited such as restrooms, locker rooms, etc.

School issued Chromebooks are property of Copper Hills High School and access is designed for educational purposes according to the Jordan School District Acceptable Use Policy. Devices should only be used during designated learning time in the classroom. Gaming, social chatting, etc. is prohibited in the classroom.

We recognize that as a school, we partner with parents in helping students develop healthy habits with electronic devices. Cell phones and electronic devices can be a major distraction to the learning process for all students.  Excessive screen time has proven to be detrimental to students. Teachers have the authority to enforce the Copper Hills High School Cell Phone & Device Policy and limit the use of electronic devices, including school-issued Chromebooks, during class. This may include students turning in phones/devices upon entering classes.

If a student violates the above policy, the following will occur:

  • 1st Offense: The student will turn over their phone/device to the teacher to be kept securely, in an alternate location for the duration of the period.
    • If the student refuses to comply, an administrator will be contacted.
    • The cell phone policy violation will be logged as a Skyward referral by the teacher and include a discussion between the student and teacher to retrieve the phone/device at the end of the period.
    • The teacher may contact parent/guardian to notify of the policy violation.

  • 2nd Offense: The phone/device will be taken down to the Attendance Office. Students can retrieve the phone/device from the Attendance Office at the end of the school day after meeting with an administrator.
    • If the student refuses to comply, an administrator will be contacted.
    • The cell phone policy violation will be logged as a Skyward referral and the parent/guardian will be contacted by the teacher to notify of the policy violation.

  • 3rd Offense: The phone/device will be taken down to the Attendance Office. At this point, a parent will need to come to the office to retrieve the phone/device from the Attendance Office at the end of the school day after meeting with an administrator.
    • If the student refuses to comply, an administrator will be contacted.
    • The cell phone policy violation will be logged as a Skyward offense by the administrator.

  • If the behavior continues or a pattern develops across multiple classes, the student will be subject to additional disciplinary action including suspension, out or in school and/or behavior contract.

There may be exceptions to this policy for compliance with accommodations made for students as determined by an IEP, 504, medical, or language needs. These will be communicated to both students and teachers on a case-by-case basis.

Parents are encouraged to be proactive and communicate with students before school, during passing periods, at lunch, or after school. In emergency situations parents are welcome to contact the school so that a note can be sent to the student in class.
